Before Dorothy, Toto, and the Scarecrow ever set foot in Oz, there was L. Frank Baum—a dreamer, actor, and storyteller whose imagination would one day create one of the most enduring tales in American literature. Before Oz tells the remarkable true story of Baum’s life and the strong women who inspired him, including his wife Maud Gage Baum and her mother, suffragette Matilda Gage.
Told through a blend of history, humor, and heartfelt storytelling, Grove’s play travels from 19th-century New York to the Dakota plains and on to Hollywood, tracing the moments that led to the writing of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. With theatrical magic, music, and imagination, the story reminds audiences that courage, love, and belief can turn even the grayest world into technicolor.

Run time: 120 minutes, includes 10 minute intermission.

Recommended for ages 8 and up. No infants being held. All patrons require a ticket regardless of age.
