SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 5
Thierry Fischer leads a program inspired by the striking Nordic landscape and the passions of its people. Sibelius’ Finlandia powerfully evokes his country’s struggles toward freedom while his Symphony No. 5 was commissioned by the Finnish government in celebration of his 50th birthday; the euphoric finale was inspired by Sibelius’ sighting of a flock of swans that soared “into the solar haze like a silver ribbon.” Evening Land contrasts composer Bent Sørensen’s memory of peaceful fields in his native Denmark with the bustling streets of his adopted home in NYC. Plus, 2022-23 Artist-in-Association Emmanuel Pahud returns to give the U.S. premiere of a new flute concerto by Erkki-Sven Tüür, the frontman of one of Estonia’s most popular rock bands.
