Houston native Lee Deffebach was one of Utah’s leading abstract painters, known for her large color abstract paintings which grew out of the Abstract Expressionist movement. Deffebach received her BA from the University of Utah in 1949, studied at the Art Students League and was a Fulbright Scholar in Rome. She worked with the New York modernists in the 1950s and 60s. During the 1960s. Deffebach experimented with pop art, and created toy-like sculptures of cars and trucks and painted soda bottles, much as Andy Warhol did during the same era. Back in Utah, she turned to abstract expressionism and color-field painting. In 1989, Deffebach returned to study at the University of Utah, and earned an M.F.A. in painting.
